[CHINA] Considerazioni su la scrittura intitolata Riflessioni sopra la causa della Cina doppo venuta in Europa il decreto dell' Em. di Tournon. [Rome: s.e] 1709.
Scarce work in defence of the edict promulgated by Cardinal Tournon, issued in 1707, which condemned the mixing of Confucian rites and Catholic practices, a tolerance upheld by the Society of Jesus in their missionary work in China. The work is an example of the tensions between different evangelisation strategies in the context of the Asian missions. Cardinal Tournon, sent to China as papal legate by Pope Clement XI, severely condemned the integration of Confucian elements into Catholic celebrations, such as ancestor worship and ceremonies in honour of Confucius, declaring them incompatible with Christian doctrine. This edict, while reaffirming Catholic orthodoxy, triggered a conflict with Emperor Kangxi, who interpreted the condemnation as an offence to Chinese cultural tradition.
