[CHINA] HELMAN, Isidore Stanislas Henri (1743-1809). Abrege historique des principaux traits de la vie de Confucius. Paris: chez l'Auteur and M. Ponce, [c.a 1685]
Scarce large-paper copy of this collection of plates illustrating scenes from the life of Confucius. Helman selected the pictures from an album belonging to the French minister Henri Bertin made by Chinese artists and brought to France by the Jesuit missionary Jean Joseph Marie Amiot, who lived in China from 1750. Amiot published the Life of Confucius in the same year as Helman's work, in volume 12 of his 'Mémoires'. Helman, already author of the Suite de Seize Estampes, adapted the style of Chinese art to European tastes, at a time of growing interest in chinoiserie
