[BINDING POPE INNOCENZO XI] WRIGHT, John (1617-1694). Ragguaglio della solenne comparsa, fatta in Roma...dall’illustrissimo conte di Castelmaine ambasciadore straordinario. Roma: Ercole, [1687]
Sumptuous copy in the armorial binding of Innocent XI in decorated morocco attributed to a Roman workshop. The work documents the reception at the Vatican of the British ambassador Lord Castelmaine, sent by James II of England in an attempt to reconcile with Pope Innocent. Edited by the painter J.M. Wright, the work is embellished with magnificent engravings by the famous Arnold Van Westerhout after drawings by various artists, including Ferri, Cornely, Lenardi and Camers. The most outstanding of the plates is a large fold-out, over a metre long, depicting the preparation of the grand reception banquet and the various representations of the carriages used for the ambassador's triumphal entry into Rome
Folio, (400 x 265mm). 13 (of 14, the last plate depicting two risers is missing) numbered and signed engraved plates, 1 of which is large and folded several times (33.4x121 cm), large engraved frontispiece with a scene of Castelmaine's homage to the Pope, on c. A2r portrait of the dedicatee, the Duchess of Modena and large engraved intaglio initials, lily watermark (browning and a few stains, small wormholes in the margin of the large folded plate). Contemporary morocco armorial binding of Innocent XI made by a Roman workshop; papal coat of arms in the centre of the boards framed by a double frame decorated with flowering branches, gilt decorated to spine, marbled endpapers (small chippings to spine). Provenance: Sanminiatelli. Inside modern slipcase. (1)
