CARAMUEL LOBKOWITZ, Juan (1606-1682). Architectura civil recta, y obliqua. Considerada y dibuxada en el templo de Ierusalem. Vigevano: Camillo Corrado, 1678.
Atlas of one of the most important and scarce works in the field of architecture in the Spanish language. The illustrations document the first systematic application of three-dimensional anamorphosis on architectural structures, a technique previously developed by authors such as Niceron, Caus and Maignan for flat surfaces. This innovation involved the use of distorted architectural elements, such as oblique columns and capitals, to adapt to the dynamic forms of contemporary buildings. The treatise explores classical themes of civil architecture, such as practical geometry, perspective and the Five Orders, but goes further, tackling the reconstruction of Solomon's Temple and structures in the New World, including the church of Santo Domingo. The author, Caramuel, bishop of Vigevano and multifaceted intellectual, was the author of around 260 works (of which only sixty were published) and contributed to many disciplines, including architecture, mathematics, physics and music. He had relations with prominent personalities of the time, such as Descartes and Gassendi.
