BETTINI, Mario (1582-1657). Apiaria universae philosophiae mathematicae, in quibus paradoxa, et nova pleraque machinamenta ad usus eximios traducta. Bologna: Ferroni, 1641.
First edition of this treatise on optics and geometry, illustrated with more than 600 engraved images, which explores topics such as anamorphosis, relief, conic sections and perspective tools. The work, comparable to those by Schott and Kircher, reflects the influence of geometry and optics on the scientific revolution and the fusion of abstract science and practical skills. Mario Bettini was a teacher of mathematics and military architecture, tutor to Ottavio Farnese and military advisor to the courts of Parma, Modena and Novellara. He was also the inventor of scientific instruments such as the prospettograph, the baculum, an instrument for measuring distances, and the pantometro, an instrument that allowed the definition of correct harmonic intervals (all illustrated in the work).
2 vols, folio, (358 x 248 mm). Folding engraved allegorical frontispiece repeated in both volumes, engraved equestrian portrait of the dedicatee Matteo Galasso (sometimes erroneously identified as Ferdinand II) Over 600 copper-engraved illustrations in the text, very good internal condition (blank leaves between parts missing) Binding with 18th century boards and restored 19th century spine with gilt titles on label (some wear to joints, plate of first volume detached). Provenance: Luton Library (heraldic ex libris of John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute (1793-1848); Vaccarino Library (20th century). (2)
