STATIUS, PUBLIUS PAPINUS (45-96 A.D.). Opera. Venice: Paganini, 1490.
Copy belonging to Count Ercole Silva, landscape gardener and author of 'Dell'arte dei giardini inglesi' of this edition of the complete works of Statius borrowed from the first edition edited by Octavian Scotus. Statius, best known for his epic poems written during the reign of Domitian, such as the Thebaid and the unfinished Achilleid, was a central figure in the medieval school curriculum. His Silvae, the first book of which is in this copy annotated by a contemporary hand, lost relevance in the 7th century until being rediscovered by Poggio Bracciolini in the early 15th century.
Folio, (310 x 215mm). Text in two columns accompanied by commentaries (the first and last blank leaves are missing, replaced in the 18th century, small woodworm holes to the first and last leaves touching the characters but do not impair legibility). Late 18th century binding with leather spine, gilt decorated title and decoration, decorated boards. (small woodworm holes). Provenance: The first book of the 'Silvae' annotated by a contemporary hand; 'Herculis de Silva' heraldic ex libris and stamp to the endpapers of Count Ercole Silva (1756-1840); Count Sanminiatelli, 20th century heraldic ex libris.
