[PISA] BORGHI, Camillo Ranieri (17th cent.). L'Oplomachia pisana. Lucca: Frediana, 1713.
Borghese copy of this scarce first edition of a unique work which recounts the origins of the 'Giòo der Ponte', the traditional folkloric battle which took place on the Ponte di Mezzo in Pisa on the last Saturday of June. Due to the violence of the fight, described in this work, the tradition was suspended in 1808 at the behest of the Regent Maria Luisa of Etruria, who remarked: 'For play is too much, for war is too little'. The contest was revived in a less bloody form at the beginning of the 20th century.
