[PERUGIA] Primum [- quartum] volumen Statutorum Auguste Perusie magistratuum ordines et auctoritem aliaque egregia ciuitatis ordinamenta continens. Perugia: Cartolari, 1523-1528.
An editorial masterpiece, the editio princeps of the statutes of Perugia, which appeared at auction for the last time in 1936 (RBH). The 4-volume work, published by the printer Girolamo Cartolari, was commissioned by the local magistrates to consolidate the city's laws with special attention to editorial quality as it was meant to be a symbol of prestige for the city and its institutions. Cartolari therefore used materials and plates of Venetian provenance, also thanks to relationships with printers such as Lucantonio Giunta and Giorgio Arrivabene. The volumes were dedicated to influential illustrations: Cardinal Francesco Armellini and Gentile Baglioni, head of the ruling house in Perugia. The work reflects the tension between local power and papal authority, while the lengthy printing process, which lasted until 1528, suggests political and logistical complications.
