Copy from the collection of the English Dante scholar George Vernon, with the arms of Cardinal Aldobrandini (1536-1605), future Pope Clement VIII. The manuscript is a copy of the Vita di Mecenate by Cesare Caporali, which circulated in manuscript form, as attested by other copies in public libraries (noteworthy is the autograph ms.I74 dated 1591, preserved in the Biblioteca Comunale Augusta in Perugia), before being published in 1604
8vo, (195 x 135 mm). 108 leaves, copyist's handwriting in cursive, 18 lines (waterstains and ink perspiration). Red morocco armorial binding to of Ippolito Aldobrandini within a rich gilt decorated frame with foliage and stars, gilt decorations to spine (small chipping at top of spine). Provenance: George John Warren, 5 Baron Vernon (1803-1866) ex libris with monogram with the motto 'Vernon semper viret'; Sotheby's 1920 sale record, lot 97.
