Fine copy of the first edition of the collection of essays and translations of Greek authors by the eminent Hellenist Stephanus Negri or Stephanus Niger, disciple of Demetrius Chalcondyles. The collection includes the Commentarioli in aurea carmina Pythagorae, the Praefationes, dedicated by Niger to Homer, Pindar and Livy, and three short writings that had a lasting influence on gastronomic literature: De victo Pythagorico, De vino and De Nimia obsoniorum appetito.
4to, 5 parts in one volume, (218 x 164mm). 5 title pages within an elegant engraved title frame for each part, engraved initials, text in Latin and Greek characters, good internal condition (last errata leaf missing). 20th century reuse vellum binding. Provenance: 'Jo.simo Marescalcho saluus (?)' antique ownership inscription to title page, numerous notes in the margins in black and red to the translation of 'De nimia obsoniorum appetentia'. (1)
