HIERONYMUS Santo (pseud.). Vitas patrum. Venice: Ottaviano Scoto, 14 February 1483.
Scarce incunable (4 passages at auction in the last 30 years, RBH) of the 'Vitas patrum', considered the most significant hagiographic collection of medieval literature. The collection was varied and expanded over the centuries, with the main source attributed to St. Jerome and, for more recent legends, to the 'Legenda aurea' by Jacopo da Varagine.
4to, (225 x 165mm). Gothic characters, blank spaces reserved for initials (gathering a-a8 containing the index is missing, the volume begins with the incipit on leaf b1, a few small woodworm holes in the outer margin without affecting text, a few waterstains, last two leaves with restorations to the upper margin with loss of a few words to the register). 18th century vellum binding, gilt title to spine (small woodworm holes). Provenance: Several contemporary notes to the margins. (1)
