GREGORIUS I (540-604 A.D.). Dialogorum libri quattuor. Venice: Paganini, 1492.
A scarce and elegant edition, enriched by a woodcut engraving of St. Peter at the beginning of the text, with only one passage at auction in the last 80 years (RBH). The Dialogues of Gregory the Great focus on the miracles performed by the Italian saints of his time, with particular attention to the figure of Saint Benedict of Norcia. Through a simple and accessible style, the author offers a vivid portrait of the protagonists of a deeply spiritual Church, intertwined with the traditions and life of rural communities.
4to, (190 x 145mm). Beautiful title page with woodcut vignettes depicting St. Peter, introduction to the work printed in red, spaces for initials (last blank leaf missing). Modern binding in reused vellum, blue edges. (1)
