GEILER VON KAISERSBERG, Johann (1445-1510). Navicula siue speculu[m] fatuoru[m] Strasbourg, 1510.
First edition of the 37 sermons by Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg, a preacher from Strasbourg, based on Sebastian Brandt's Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools), with which he commented on the follies and vices of the time. These sermons, preached in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, became very popular and contributed to the enduring success of Brandt's work. An ardent defender of the Roman Church, he openly opposed the positions of Luther's followers in Germany, polemicising against what he perceived to be a decadence of faith. This edition precedes the 1511 edition, better known for its greater number of woodcuts
4to, (205 x 150mm). Woodcut of the ship of fools on the title page, woodcut of a jester and an upside-down man in a chariot on the verso of the last page of the index (q3, q4 replaced with two duplicates of q1, q2 then missing, light spotting and some light marginal waterstains). 18th century marbled carta rustica binding.
