DE VALDES (1490-1532). Due dialoghi. L'uno di Mercurio, et Caronte...quel, che accadè nella guerra dopo l'anno, 1521...si trattano le cose auenute in Roma nell'anno, 1527. [Venice: Brucioli (?)]
A work containing one of the most vivid accounts of the Sack of Rome, the rare translation, never sold at auction (RBH), of the two political works by Charles V's secretary and official Latinist. In the 'Latancio ovvero Diálogo de las cosas ocurridas en Roma' (1527), which was later accused of being a Lutheran work and for which he was tried and acquitted, and in the 'Diálogo de Mercurio, Carón' (1531), in which he absolves the emperor and puts all the blame on his opponents, he blames Clement VII for the sack of Rome and Francis I for the Franco-Habsburg conflict. In an elegant and sometimes ironic style, his religious spirit emerges, condemning war as the result of false religiosity and hoping for a unified Christian society under a universal empire
