[GASTRONOMY] MESSI SBUGHI, Cristoforo (16th century). Il novo libro da banchetti, nel quale s'insegna il modo di apparecchiar tauole... Et far d'ogni sorte di vivanda. Venice: Imberti, 1621.
A rare seventeenth-century edition that has never appeared at auction (RBH) of one of the rarest and most famous treatises on Renaissance cooking. The first part is a detailed description of the menus and entertainment for the banquets held at the court of Ferrara between 1524 and 1548, while the second part is an extensive recipe book. Linked to this volume is the first edition of Thomagni's Dialogue on the alleged inferiority of women to men: although the title seems anti-feminine, the work actually takes a pro-feminist stance.
8vo, (150 x 100mm) Printer's device on title page, woodcut initials and vignettes (restoration with integrations to title page, trimmed at margins with loss of page numbering at times). Printer's device on the title page (trimmed in the upper margin with occasional loss of numbering, leaves 145-50 restored with severe losses). Vellum binding with handwritten title on spine. (1)
