[CRUSADES] RAMUSIO, Paolo (1532-1600). Della guerra di Costantinopoli per la restitutione de gl`imperatori Comneni fatta da` sig. venetiani. Venice: Nicolini, 1604.
First and only edition of this scarce work (only 2 passages at auction, RBH), which originated from a commission received by Paolo Ramusio in 1556 from the Council of Ten, who entrusted him with the translation of Geoffroy de Villehardouin's chronicle of the Fourth Crusade (1204). The aim was to extol the role of Venice in imperial history. Paul completed the Latin text in 1572, but the work remained unpublished until his death in 1600. It was his son Girolamo who resumed the work, first publishing the French edition in Lyon in 1601, followed by the present Italian version in 1604, accompanied by a dedication to Marco Contarini, whose family had brought Villehardouin's original manuscript from Flanders in 1541. Finally, the Latin version came out in Venice in 1609.
