[BINDING] THEOPHRASTUS (371; 287 a.C.) Characterum ethicorum. Parma: Bodoni, 1786.
A very good copy in an elegant contemporary morocco binding from the library of Baron Stroganow, an influential Russian politician and diplomat. Stroganow represented Russia at the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838 and, from 1837, assumed the role of guardian of the children of the famous poet Aleksandr Pushkin.
4to large,, (300 x 215mm). Engraved frontispiece with author's portrait, copper-engraved vignette to title page, very good copy. Contemporary red morocco binding with gilt decorated boards, gilt decorated spine, gilt edges, green silk endpapers, light wear. Provenance: Baron Grigori Alexandrowitsch Stroganow (1770-1857) heraldic ex libris with motto 'Terram Opes Patriae. Sibi Nomen' on the endpapers, imperial stamp in Cyrillic on the title page; French antiquarian cards from the early 20th century inserted. (1)
