VERRI, Pietro (1728-1797). Idee sull'indole del piacere. Livorno: nella Stamperia dell'Enciclopedia, 1773.
Large-margin copy of this scarce first edition (only one passage at auction, RBH), in which Pietro Verri explores the concept of human sensibility, dividing the passions into the love of pleasure and the flight from pain, the two forces that drive human action. Verri also points out that imagination and memory play a key role in the perception of pleasure and pain, and concludes that pain is more intense and enduring than pleasure, and that true philosophy can help to alleviate it.
8vo, (210 x 140mm). Wide margins (some light foxing). Contemporary leather binding with gilt decoration to spine, boards framed in gilt, marbled edges (light wear and minor chippings). (1)
