LEOPARDI, Giacomo (1798-1837). Canti. Florence: Piatti, 1831.
This scarce first edition of Leopardi's Canti contains 23 compositions, 6 of which appear for the first time: Il Risorgimento, A Silvia (with the variant initials 'Sovvienti' instead of 'Rimembri'), Le Ricordanze, Canto notturno di un pastore vagante dell'Asia, La quiete dopo la tempesta and Il sabato del villaggio. The poems are preceded by a significant dedicatory letter, Agli amici suoi di Toscana, published here for the first time, which sounds like a farewell, marked by a tone that is at once despairing and consoling. In a letter dated 23 December 1830, Leopardi reports that he has sold the manuscript of his verses for 80 zecchini and laments the difficulties of the editorial trade at the time
