TASSO, Torquato (1544-1595). Il Goffredo ovvero Gerusalemme Liberata. Venice: Antonio Groppo, 1760-61.
Fine copy in good internal condition of this famous illustrated edition of Tasso's work, whose engravings, masterfully executed by Giacomo Leonardis, are taken from drawings by Bernardo Castello (1557-1629) for the initials plates of the cantos, first used in the Genoese edition printed by Bartoli in 1590. The engraved vignettes, frontispiece and portrait of the author are the work of Pietro Antonio Novelli (1729-1804).
2 volumes, Folio, (289 x 210mm). Half-titles, engraved title page in the first volume, engraved vignette on the title page printed in red and black, an engraved portrait of the author, 20 engraved plates at the opening of the cantos, engraved illustrations (SBN incorrectly mentions a second frontispiece in the second volume) good internal condition. First half 19th century binding with vellum spine (some wear). (2)
