Copy by the famous British Dante scholar George Vernon of this first anthological collection of novels by Italian authors, collected, as Sansovino himself relates, as a pastime by a group of gentlemen and gentlewomen who took refuge in Francesco Lando's country house at Oriano during the plague of 1556.

Printer's device on title page, engraved vignette title at the beginning of each novella, engraved initials and headpieces (light occasional foxing, a small tear formerly repaired in the corner of one leaf). 19th century green morocco binding with gilt frames and inlays, gilt title to spine, gilt edges and marbled endpapers. Provenance: George John Warren, 5th Baron Vernon (1803-1866) ex libris with monogram and motto 'Vernon semper viret' (1)
