DANTE ALIGHIERI (1265-1321). Dante con l'espositioni di Christoforo Landino, et d'Alessandro Vellutello. Venice: Sessa, 1578.
Copy with royal Portuguese provenance, unfortunately missing 4 leaves of introduction but complete with the text of the Commedia, of the famous edition printed by Sessa also nicknamed 'Edition of the Great Nose' or 'Nasone'. This reprint is based on the 1564 Sessa edition (cf. Mortimer, Harvard Italian 148), the first to combine the commentaries of Vellutello and Landino, edited by Francesco Sansovino. The text is based on Bembo's edition, with summaries and allegories provided by Sansovino himself. The woodcuts used come from the Marcolini edition of 1544, reappearing here and later in the Sessa edition of 1596.
Folio, (310 x 215mm). Title page with a large engraved portrait of Dante, numerous engraved initials including three large ones at the beginning of each cantica, figured headpieces and capilettera, printer's device at colophon (without leaves a2-a4, a8 with the dedication to Gonzaga and the vocabulary of difficult words and one leaf of Landino's apologia, title page skillfully restored and reintegrated, last 4 leaves browned, occasional spotting). 18th century vellum binding, gilt title to spine, speckled edges. Provenance: Portuguese royal stamp on endpapers (19th-20th century). (1)
