A metà degli anni '60 due case tedesche erano alla ricerca di nuove soluzioni per sostituire 2 modelli che avevano in produzione per ragioni economiche e di vetustà. La prima era la Porsche, alla ricerca di una sostituta della 912 ormai troppo cara per il mercato e poco performante, la seconda era la Volkswagen che doveva necessariamente dare un seguito alla esperienza Karmann-Ghia. Le due case, legate da ottimi rapporti commerciali, s'accordarono per un progetto comune, prevedendo per la nuova vettura una carrozzeria tipo targa che potesse ospitare indifferentemente un propulsore Volkswagen o Porsche, montato in posizione centrale-posteriore e stabilendo di affidarne l'assemblaggio a una struttura terza. A tal fine costituirono nel 1966 la società VW-Porsche Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH con sede a Ludwigsburg.
Alla Porsche venne affidato il compito di progettare il telaio e le sospensioni, mentre il disegno della carrozzeria, derivato da un progetto proposto dallo studio di design Gugelot di Ulma, spetto alla Karmann, che poi si sarebbe occupata anche dell'assemblaggio. La nuova auto, denominata "914", venne presentata al Salone dell'Automobile di Francoforte sul Meno nel settembre del 1969: forme squadrate, un'originale e aerodinamica carrozzeria targa, con tetto rigido asportabile e robusto roll bar, meccanica, ideata dalla Porsche, che prevedeva il posizionamento posteriore-centrale del motore, sospensioni a 4 ruote indipendenti con barre di torsione, cambio manuale a 5 marce e freni a disco su tutte le ruote, due le motorizzazioni disponibili al debutto il 4 cilindri Volkswagen di 1679 cm cubi a iniezione e (914/6) c'era il 6 cilindri Porsche a 2 carburatori ex 911 T.
Questa 914/6 del 1970 (Ia Serie) parte da una base "stradale" ed è stata realizzata secondo le specifiche della versione 914/6 GT versione impiegata per le competizioni. Allestita secondo la fiche internazionale HTP CSAI Velocità, categoria GTS, si tratta di una auto italiana all'origine, regolarmente targata e revisionata. Il roll-bar è stato smontato per l'uso stradale ma è disponibile.
Il motore, preparato dall'azienda Capricorn in Germania secondo le specifiche della fiche (nota per le sue preparazioni molto raffinate tecnicamente), eroga 200 cv ed ha le caratteristiche del motore della Carrera 6: doppia accensione, alberi a camme Carrera 6, carburatori Weber 46 ida, bielle in titanio, monoblocco in alluminio. Anche il sistema frenante è stato rivisto e migliorato con doppia pompa e pinze anteriori maggiorate (secondo fiche). E' dotata di un differenziale autobloccante e di un impianto di scarico sportivo/stradale, replica dell'originale montato sulle 914/6 ufficiali.
In the mid-1960s, two German manufacturers were looking for new solutions to replace two models they had out of production due to economic reasons and age. The first was Porsche, looking for a replacement for the 912, which was now too expensive for the market and had poor performance, and the second was Volkswagen, which had to follow up the Karmann-Ghia experience. The two manufacturers, linked by excellent business relations, agreed on a joint project, envisaging a targa-type body for the new car that could accommodate either a Volkswagen or Porsche engine, mounted in a central-rear position, and deciding to entrust its assembly to a third party. To this end, they formed the company VW-Porsche Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH with its headquarters in Ludwigsburg in 1966.
Porsche was entrusted with the design of the chassis and suspension, while the body design, based on a project proposed by the Gugelot design studio in Ulm, was the responsibility of Karmann, who would then also handle assembly. The new car, named '914', was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1969: squared-off forms, an original and aerodynamic targa body, with a removable hard top and sturdy roll bar, mechanicals, conceived by Porsche, which provided for the rear-central positioning of the engine, 4-wheel independent suspension with torsion bars, 5-speed manual gearbox and disc brakes on all wheels, two engines were available at the debut the 4-cylinder Volkswagen of 1679 cm³ injection and (914/6) there was the 6-cylinder Porsche with 2 carburettors former 911 T.

The engine, prepared by the Capricorn company in Germany to the specifications of the fiche (known for its very technically refined preparations), delivers 200 hp and has the characteristics of the Carrera 6 engine: twin ignition, Carrera 6 camshafts, Weber 46 ida carburettors, titanium connecting rods, aluminium cylinder block. The braking system has also been revised and improved with double pumps and oversized front calipers (according to the fiche). It is equipped with a self-locking differential and a sports/road exhaust system, a replica of the original fitted to the official 914/6.
