Incomplete copy of this scarce first edition collection of engravings, all double-page illustrations of monuments, buildings, and ruins of Rome. These are not purely illustrative plates, but views of an inhabited city, offering a portrait of life in mid-16th-century Rome.Oblong folio (but bound as 4to), (255 x 204mm). Double-page engraved title-page and dedication, 35 (of 39) double-page plates mounted on brackets (missing plates 8-9 and 38-39, minor restoration to plate no. 4, signs of colouring to plate no. 34). Elegant 20th-century binding in half vellum, title lettered to spine in manuscript, blue edges (inner spine unglued, some light wear). (1)
