PIRRO LIGORIO (1513-1583). Antiquae urbis imago accuratissime ex vetusteis monumentmenteis formata. Rome: Carlo Losi, 1773.
Very rare reimpression, with only one previous auction result (RBH) of this map of ancient Rome drawn by Pirro Ligorio, engraved by Jacob Boss, and printed by Tramenzini in 1561. The great detail combined with its size makes it an extraordinary document testifying the antiquarian fervour of 16th-century Rome and the rediscovery of tradition at the time of the Grand Tour; Goethe himself purchased a copy of this edition in Rome to place on one of the walls of his Gartenhaus in Weimar, now preserved in the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek.12 loose plates, (sheet c. 580 x 440mm, impression c. 420 x 360mm). complete series of etchings including the uncut map. Provenance: numbering on the back of the sheets retraced in old India ink. (1)
