The first illustrated edition of the first scientifically accurate depiction of the plan of ancient Rome. The work was first printed in octavo by Antonio Blado in 1534 without illustrations. The figures include the statue of Heracles attributed to Phidias and one of the first representations of the Laocoon group after its discovery in 1506 with the missing terracotta arm made by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli and later removed around 1797. One of the first attempts to map and orientate the ruins of ancient Rome.Folio, (215 x 210mm). Numerous illustrations and a woodcut map in the text, initials and large printer's device in the colophon, variant B surveyed by OPAC (foxing to inner margins of pp. 117-122 with some marginal dampstaining, antique ownership inscription erased on the back of map 122 with loss of a few words).
