Eighteenth-century edition of the famous catalogue of the collection of arms and armour of viri illustri collected by Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol (1529-1595) and exhibited in the Heldenrìstkammer of Ambras Castle near Insbruck. Thanks to the diplomatic relations of the Habsburgs, he was able to collect the armour and weapons owned by 125 famous princes and military commanders of his time and previous centuries. The first catalogue was published in Latin in 1601, each 'hero' being portrayed dressed in his armour and described by a biography. The collection was so famous that already in the 17th century it was open to the public for an admission fee and is still preserved in the same rooms today4to, (233 x 185mm). Frontispiece, 125 engraved portraits in armour, a vignette depicting Ambras Castle in the preface (lightly browned, frontispiece with some repairs, slight halo at the margins of the last leaves). Contemporary binding with gilt title and decoration on spine, red edges. (Without boards, exposed marbled endpapers, some wear on spine).
