First Latin translation, edited by Cosimo Pazzi (1466-1513), of the 41 lectures by the Neo-Platonic philosopher Maximus of Tyre on philosophical and religious questions such as Whether Socrates was right not to defend himself, Whether the life of Diogenes the Cynic should be preferred. A cultured intellectual and profound connoisseur of the poetry of Homer and antiquity, he combines Platonism, of which he claims to be a follower, with Aristotelian, Stoic, Cynic, Neo-Pythagorean and Epicurean doctrines. Folio, (293 x 205 mm). Title-page within an engraved border with classical motifs (some foxing and a few leaves with some staining in the margins). Second half of the 19th century binding with gilt title and decoration on spine. Provenance: Contemporary ownership inscription at the base of the title page (difficult to read), a few notes in the margins. (1)
