KLINGER, Max (1857-1920). Intermezzi. Opus IV. Nurnberg: Stroefer, 1881.
Collection in very good condition, the fourth produced by Klinger in his career, of 12 etchings dedicated to the engraver and art dealer Hermann Sagert, who had supported the publication of the young artist's works. Max Klinger's Intermezzi offers a wide assortment of amusements, such as short comic interludes between the scenes of an opera. The portfolio emphasises the capriciousness of life and includes a sequence of four prints on the mythological lives of centaurs, four prints based on Hans Jakob Christoph von Grimmelshausen's 17th century short story ''The Adventurous Simplicissimus'', and four free compositions that further elaborate on Klinger's favourite themes of desire, death and fantasy. The twelve etchings vary in size and format, but all reveal sublime vistas and demonstrate Klinger's mastery of the vocabulary of Romantic landscapes and the lessons he learned from studying Japanese prints....The series is also a tribute to Robert Schumann, author of the six piano Intermezzos, his opus 4 as Klinger's Intermezzos' (Heather Hess, German Expressionist Digital Archive Project, German Expressionism: Works from the Collection, 2011.)Folio, (630 x 450mm). 12 etchings numbered I-XII in plate, loose. Original half-cloth publisher's binding with plates on paper and titles in red to upper board. (1)
