D'ANNUNZIO, Gabriele (1863-1938); DE CAROLIS, Adolfo (1874-1928). Dante adriacus, 1920.
Copy with an important dedication by D'Annunzio to Attilio Susi (1874 -1935), interventionist socialist, elected to parliament in 1919 on the D'avanguardia list where he supported the Fiuman enterprise several times; an anti-fascist, he escaped capture in 1926 and fled to France where he collaborated with Italian expatriates and died in Metz in 1935. The Vate used to give the portrait to Italian personalities who were in favour of the Fiume enterprise and had in fact asked De Carolis to place the labarum of the Italian Regency of Carnaro with the serpent enclosing the seven stars of Ursa Major at the base of the portrait on the right. An interesting testimony to the Fiuman enterprise and the instrumentalisation of the figure of Dante for nationalistic purposes.Woodcut (820 x 580mm). (The lower part containing the title is missing, restoration in the centre). Provenance: Ad Attilio Susi questa effige del Dante adriaco che sollevi la virtù della nostra gente. Maggio 1921, Gabriele D'Annunzio. (1)
