[LIGURIA] CHAFRION, Joseph (1653-1698) Carta del la Riviera de Genova con sus verdaderos confines y caminos...Topographia de la Liguria. Milan: Marcantonio del Re, 1735.
An impressive and extremely detailed map of Liguria with the side legends listing the cities on the map and their coordinates. Joseph Chafrion drew and engraved the map on commission of the Governor and Captain General of the State of Milan, Don Giovanni Tommaso Enriquez de Cabrera as the Ligurian territory represented a strategic link between Spain and the Duchy of Milan, which was a Spanish possession from 1535 to 1706. Chafrion's work represents a clear progress compared to previous cartographic representations, becoming an indispensable cornerstone for the representation of the Ligurian territory in its entirety, in fact it will be imitated and reprinted several times by Andrew Dury (London, 1764), by Felden (London, 1783), Gravier (Turin, 1784 and Genoa, 1784). Framed map, (900 x 2500mm, interior measurements). 8 map sheets plus side-printed legends applied anciently on cloth (some wear and tear to the joints, chipping and antique restoration mainly to the legends). Within modern frame protected by glass. (1)
