Genuine copy of the first edition of this work describing the famous 'Venturi effect', the reduction in fluid pressure that occurs when a fluid flows through a duct or narrow channel. While professor of philosophy at Modena, Venturi was sent to Paris as secretary to a delegation representing the Duke of Modena. He stayed for a year and a half, coming into contact with many learned French scientists and publishing several treatises, including this one. Roberts and Trent call it a classic and surprisingly scarce work in the field of experimental hydrodynamics, describing a series of experiments that the author undertook in Italy, using Poleni's efflux apparatus.
