4 volumes, of 9 in total, of the first German edition published between 1749 and 1776. The text combines Georg Leonhard Huth's German translations of three important English ornithological works: A natural history of uncommon birds by George Edwards (1743-1751), Gleanings of natural history (1758-1764), and Natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands by Mark Catesby (1748-1754). The fine plates were re-engraved and embellished by Seligmann and his collaborators inspired by Catesby's originals.4 (of 9) volumes in two volumes, Folio, (395 x 245mm). Volumes 1,2,5 and 6, engraved frontispieces to the first volume, engraved title-pages in red and black, 207 plates, 102 for the first two volumes numbered I-CII and 105 for volumes 5 and 6 numbered I-CV (first volume with noticeable dampstains throughout which fortunately do not damage the colouring, more serious in the second volume where the last leaf of the text has some losses due to weakening, plate 14 with a repaired tear in the centre, small loss of text at the bottom right corner, plate 48 with a tear in the centre without loss of text; second volume with light but diffuse water stains to margins not weakening the paper except for the last few leaves of text). Contemporary full leather binding, title-piece to spine, marbled endpapers, blue edges. (First volume with the last few quires partially unbound and losses on spine, second with some wear).
