GALIGAI, Francesco (16th cent.). Pratica d'arithmetica. Florence: Giunti, 1548.
Scarce second edition, after the first of 1521, of this important work on mathematics, here revised and considerably enlarged. It is a well-explained summary of everything known about solving equations of the first two degrees and systems of equations reducible to the first two degrees, and problems of indeterminate analysis. The work is also important for the algebraic notations used and the historical information on the development of mathematics in Italy in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.4to, (208 x 150mm). Printer's device to title page, numerous mathematical formulae in the text (small, light mark to lower right corner without touching text). 18th-century editorial boards in carta rustica. Provenance: Leone avv. del Prete 1868 (ownership inscription to endpaper, probably Leone del Prete (1821-1886) lawyer and scholar, director of the library of Lucca). (1)
