FIORAVANTI, Leonardo (1517-1588). La cirugia. Venice: Sessa, 1570.
The first copy of this edition of Fioravanti's work on medical practice to appear at auction (RBH), having belonged to a woman, Margherita Grilla of Venice, with dense contemporary annotations. The author, whose work combines knowledge and use of medicaments with surgical pracice, was a highly successful self-taught physician, a tireless scholar, and discoverer of new remedies from the empiricist school in contrast to the dogmatism of his time. In this regard, he writes in 'Cirurgia' that in the many dissections he performed, he never found black bile, phlegm or the vital spirit, but instead states that he observed the lungs, tongue, spleen and liver; all organs that, unlike the humours, are concrete and can be medically treated and cured. 8vo, (150 x 103mm). Printer's device to title-page (uniformly browned). Contemporary full vellum binding (old restoration with additions on spine). Provenance: 6 leaves densely annotated with meical recipes bound at the end of the volume, numerous contemporary notes by different hands in the text; libro ? di me Bartolomeo Pagliera Francesco Pagliera Margheritta Grilla daughter of Gustavino (?) de Venezia .
