Revised second edition, published two years after the first, also printed in Leiden. Descartes started the work in 1630, but decided not to publish it because of Galileo's condemnation in 1633. The De Homine began as an attempt to embrace all animal physiology, but essentially is a supplement to the Discours de la Methode, published in 1637.4to, (201 x 147mm). 10 plates (5 of which folding and one with two movable engravings showing the inner regions of the heart), several engraved plates and woodcuts in the text, some full-page (dampstain in the lower margin throughout the volume, gathering bound at the end, D1 and D3 postposed by one leaf). Contemporary full vellum binding, title lettered to spine in manuscript (some light wear with minor restorations). (1)
