Collection of 99 plates from Buffon's Collection des animaux quadrupèdes, published at the Hotel de Thou at the end of the 18th century, perhaps the most valuable and scarce edition of the French naturalist's works. The absence of a volume number on the spine suggests that this was intended as a separate collection.4to, (248 x 185mm). 99 engraved plates with period watercolouring (light staining). Contemporary full leather binding with gilt title-piece to spine (chipping to spine, hinges weak). Provenance: traces of paper ex-libris to endpapers, 20th-century Russian private library stamp and a second 19th-century stamp to the first blank leaf. (1)
