Scarce second edition, enlarged with 87 plates compared to the first of 1590, of this iconic treatise on ancient and modern costumes, in which the author, a cousin and pupil of Titian, describes the particularities of the clothes of the then-known world in minute detail. Cicognara 1819: 'Work of the best known among the ancients of this genre'-8vo, (172 x 110 mm). 507 full-page woodcuts (including 5 views of Venice) depicting costumes within architectural frames, designed by Vecellio and engraved by Christoph Krieger (light browning, small tear to upper margin of pp. 44-45 with small loss of engraving, edges restored at p. 225 and p. 400 without loss of text, lacking final blank). Vellum binding (first half 19th century), gilt title-piece to spine.
