Second, expanded edition, after the first of 1675-79, of the most important work of Baroque art history. The monumental nature of this work earned the author the nickname 'The German Vasari'. The plates, many double-page and some folded, are printed on strong paper and in excellent condition, except for some browning. For this edition, the original copperplates, left by the author to his wife and later acquired by the publisher, were re-used: the inscriptions in the lower margin were erased and the title was engraved in the upper margin. Important provenance of Julius Bèhler (1860-1934), who founded the gallery of the same name in Munich in 1880, later opening new branches in Switzerland and the United States; in 1895 Emperor Wilhelm II granted the art dealer the title of Imperial Prussian Court Antiques Dealer.8 volumes, Folio, (408 x 256mm). Allegorical frontispieces to each volume, 854 plates (including the 4 plates in the text to the first volume and the engraved title pages preceding some collections of plates), large engraved vignettes in the text (small tear to one folding plate in vol. 6 and small wormhole lightly touching text and engraving for the first part of vol. 8, marginal worming not touching text in the second part of the volume, some light wear). Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled sides, gilt title; and numbering-pieces to spine, red edges (some light wear). Provenance: Ex-libris affixed to each endpaper of Julius Bèhler (1860-1934), one of the greatest art dealers in Germany at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries; barely legible contemporary stamp on the half-title and title page of the first volume.
