PISTRUCCI, Filippo (1782-1859). Iconologia. Milan: Tosi, 1819-1821.
Incomplete copy of this scarce first edition of this collection of symbolic figures for the use of painters and sculptors, by Filippo Pistrucci, Risorgimento patriot, artist, and teacher of Italian in England. It takes up and modernises Cesare Ripa's 16th-century Iconologia, especially from a graphic point of view, as he was among the first in Italy to use the neoclassical a puro contorno style.2 volumes, folio, (309 x 210mm). 192 (of 240) etching and aquatint plates, all finely watercoloured and accompanied by text in Italian and French (lacking pp. 103-104, occasional light spotting). Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt title and decoration to spine (some wear, several leaves loose in second volume). Provenance: private library markings, pencilled notes to endpapers.
