First complete edition of these 41 erotic plates illustrating objects and sculptures found in the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum and conserved at the Naples Museum. Due to their indecent nature, the objects were only exhibited in a separate room in the Archaeological Museum of Naples from 1819 after the interest of Francis I of Bourbon.Folio, (318 x 236mm) 41 full-page plates, alternating with their descriptions (scattered foxing, marked browning to plates 17 and 31, restorations and marginal reinforcements to the preserved original covers and the first and last leaves). Later half-vellum binding, gilt title-piece to spine, original covers preserved and rebound (some light wear). Provenance: signature to the cover and title page H Ronot (probably Henry Ronot (1908-2003), curator of antiquities and works of art in Haute Marne). (1)
