DAVID, John (1743-1790). Divers portraits graves a l'eauforte et dedies a M. Dominique Corvi Peintre Celebre. 1775.
Complete series, in fine condition and with full margins, of the various Venetian portraits dedicated to the painter Domenico Corvi (1721-1803), master of the Genoese painter in Rome. All the figures refer to Venice and its surroundings and reflect the sophistication and theatricality that characterised the city's culture in the 18th century. Along the underside of the prints are satirical quotations from the 'Satires' of Nicolas Boileau-Despr?aux (1636-1711) commenting on the figures depicted. David was the first Italian printmaker to use the recently developed medium of aquatint, and the technique allowed him to give his figures a variety of tones that were difficult to achieve with etching. The same technique, and the choice of using satirical quotations to accompany it, would be used 20 years later by Goya for Los Caprichos. Second state with aquatint after the first state only engraved (Blanc II, p.99, 8-19). Watermarks: 3 crescents; IMPERIAL: PGG; half cartouche. Uncut plates (12)
