An excellent copy of the first edition in its original Spanish to be printed in England, and among the best in terms of the accuracy of the text and quality of the illustrations. The 68 plates were drawn by Vanderbank and G. Kent and engraved by Vander Gucht, Vertne, Baron and Claude de Bosc. 'the first with a great artistic value' (Palau). Lowndes II, 401: 'A splendid and excellent edition'-Folio, (280 x 220mm). 68 plates, engraved portrait of the Author by George Virtue, initials, head-pieces and engraved vignettes in the text (light browning, leaf 2b4 of the third volume interchanged with leaf 2p2). Contemporary full leather binding with gilt lettering; and numbering-pieces to spine, spine and board edges gilt (light wear). Provenance: Ex-libris in Cyrillic applied to the rear endpapers of the first volume. (4)
