ROSSINI, Luigi (1790-1857). Raccolta di cinquanta principali vedute di antichità tratte dai scavi fatti in Roma in questi tempi. Rome: s.e., 1818.
Scarce first edition of this collection of views masterfully engraved by Rossini, ''heir'' of Piranesi and cousin of Gioacchino Rossini. The work illustrates the monuments of ancient Rome and was produced independently by the young Rossini who, short of work and unable to rely on his family for support after he had finished his architectural studies at the Accademia di S. Luca under the supervision of Canova, decided to put his skills to use in the field of engraving where he achieved immediate success and for which he is still considered one of the leading artists of early 19th-century Rome.Oblong folio, (324 x 440 mm). Engraved title-page and 50 full-page etchings (light spotting to first and last leaves). 20th-century half cloth binding with marbled sides, paper label applied to upper board (some wear). (1)
