First edition of the only medieval Italian translation of Augustine's City of God, traditionally attributed to the 14th-century Florentine Dominican Jacopo Passavanti and appearing shortly after the Latin editio princeps printed by Sweynheym and Pannartz.Folio, (276 x 193mm). Text printed in Roman letter in two columns, 47 lines to a page, blank spaces for initials (missing index leaves a2,a3,a8-a12, text leaves h1,h2 and h11, and blank leaves a1, h12, some chips to the first few leaves, small wormhole to the last 6 leaves, last leaf with light chipping to the margin reinstated, lightly foxed, trimmed). 20th-century full vellum binding with decoration on spine. Provenance: Contemporary note to the incipit of the volume 'Ad usum fratris Julis a M.te Georgis'; some old notes in the text.
