A BLUE EMBROIDERED SEMI-FORMAL DRAGON ROBE (JIFU) QING DYNASTY, SECOND HALF OF 19TH CENTURY
Finely woven in gold, green, purple, yellow, white and blue tones threads with nine five-clawed dragons pursuing the flaming pearl, against a ground of clouds interspersed with peonies, lotus, bats, basket-flowers and Eight Immortals, and Buddhist emblems, the sleeves with the same motif ending with terrestrial diagrams and waves, and hem bordered by a churning waves with flowers, dragons and pearls and terrestrial diagrams, the black collar band and cuffs decorated with sinuous dragons chasing the flaming pearl and bats above cresting waves, the sleeve extensions of midnight-blue ribbed silk left plain, all original buttons. Lined in light blue silk. Jifu robes were rich in symbolic meaning, representing the entire universe in their design ; from the lishui waves at the base, anchored by a central mountain, to the dragons among clouds that swirled above, denoting authority. At the height of the Qing dynasty, medium-ranking officials wore robes with eight four-clawed dragons ; but at court, high-ranking officials' robes featured a ninth dragon, hidden inside a front flap, like this one. In very good conditions, as never being exposed to light, only few folding signs and very few humidity spots, and one old reparation as the silk is the same, in the inside linen.
