The flat top of the cover and the sides of the box are deeply carved through over twenty of alternating layers of red, black, green and yellow cinnabar lacquer to depict swirling classic clouds. The interior and the base of the box is covered in dark brown lacquer, on the side of the base incised and signed Zhang Cheng Zao.
Note: Zhang Cheng was a particularly well known Yuan Dynasty lacquer carver whose name and pieces were cited in the ' Ge Gu yao lun ' (The Essential Studies of Antiquities) that was first compiled by Zao Chao in 1388.
The deep V-cut channels on this box are characteristic of the Yuan dynasty lacquers, creating a marble effect by showing off layers of colors. In the 13th century, the emphasis on cutting through the multiple layers of lacquer was on the marble effect, but in later years the emphasis was on the pattern on the top surface.
From the same artist a dish carved with gardenia from the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Carved Lacquer in the Collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1985, cat. no. 1.
A similar one at the Metropolitan Museum, New York, donation from the Irving Collection.
