Of flat circular form with crisply carved through deep layers of cinnabar lacquer, with gently rounded sides supported on a slightly recessed base, with the top of the fitted domed cover finely decorated in deep relief, with green twigs of leaves spray, dominated by a red large open chrysanthemum blossom in the centre, surrounded by smaller blooms going all around the sides, with some in half-opened bud form, repeated in a reverse sequence around the box, the interior and the base lacquered in brownish-black. The lacquer applied to the wooden body in multiple layers, an initial layer of black overlaid by yellow to form the ground colour, then a guideline of black followed by alternate layers of red, green, yellow and black, to make seventeen separate bands of colour, with a layer of green forming the final surface; the top layer of green removed to expose a layer of red on the flower and buds. The base, close to the side of the foot, incised with a three character inscription Yang Mao Zao, made by Yang Mao; in very good condition only a very minor damage to the side of the cover and very minor age cracks.
