FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF A PIEDMONTESE GENTLEMAN
The furnishing and paintings presented here are the result of the collecting passion of a Piedmontese family that belongs to the upper echelons of the business world in Italy. A passion that bloomed in the hands of its last owner who also faithfully continued the entrepreneurial traditions of the family. The objects published in the catalogue were destined to decorate a grand residence and were chosen to form the backdrop to a joie de vivre that paid tribute both to social demands and expectations as well as to the cultural values of the day. Fine examples of these are the eighteenth-century rock crystal chandelier and a further piece of furniture from Genoa, the large chest of drawers in rosewood, not to mention the French gilt wood armchairs – the height of Rococo sophistication. Amongst these furnishings and paintings much attention in the collection was also placed upon the finest of works from the Orient. As well as furniture – the sign of contemporary tastes of the day – works of art in porcelain featured strongly in the collection, some pieces of the utmost importance such as, for example, the pair of Kangxi large Famille Verte vases, decorated with lake scenes and the bronze incense bowl made in China in the years from the 17th to the 18th centuries, with magnificent handles in the shapes of animal heads.
