FROM THE RESIDENCE OF A GENOESE LADY
The furnishings, paintings and objets d’art of this collection have been brought together over the last fifty years by a Genoese lady. The collection perfectly represents the sophisticated tastes of the upper middle-class in Genoa during the last century. It is highly refined in terms of superb taste and fine detail and has more than enhanced the luxurious yet comfortable interiors in Palazzo Brancaleone Doria, a fifteenth-century architectural jewel looking onto Piazza San Matteo, one of Genoa’s most celebrated little squares – Genoa the Superba. The residence is characterised by the typical circular form of noble Genoese palazzi and alternates a whole host of tastes and styles with the utmost equilibrium and harmony. Thus, starting off from the evocative Louis XVI entrance with two large vases in porphyry the visitor passes through to the Library with its series of gouaches that bring to mind the Grand Tour. In the owner’s private drawing room there is a gallery of eighteenth- and nineteenth century portraits hung around the fireplace as well as a secrétaire stamped Malle whilst in the hall holy scenes and mythological scenes alternate and act as a background to a double Venetian cabinet with engraved mirrors. Lastly, the dining room succeeds in creating a highly refined balance between two festive scenes in a square by Giovanni Michele Graneri, one of the greatest painters in the bambocciante style, and two gilded and carved wooden allegorical figures of Autumn and Spring, both resembling the plasticity of sculptures by Filippo Parodi.
